2013 Black History Live

Hasan Davis as York, the only African American member of Lewis & Clark's 1803-1806 expedition

York, the only black member of the 1803-1806 Lewis and Clark expedition, and Angus Augustus Burleigh, a 19th century ex-slave, soldier and scholar will be portrayed by Hasan Davis February 4-9, 2013.  The tour will travel to Front Range schools, libraries, and public venues.

Hasan Davis is a noted Kentucky poet, scholar, storyteller, youth advocate and Chautauquan (a portrayer of legendary and historical characters).  In addition to being a performer, Davis is the Commissioner for Juvenile Justice for the state of Kentucky, holds a Juris Doctorate, serves on the Federal Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee, and owns his own business, Empowerment Solutions, focusing on youth development.  Drawing on his multiple talents, Davis presents African-American characters from the past in ways that encourage audiences to read and understand more about our cultural and ethnic history and to reach for higher educational and personal achievements.  Davis' portrayals of York and Angus Augustus Burleigh were developed with support from Kentucky Humanities Council, Inc.

"Hasan made me feel like I was actually back then in that time period and witnessing what went on a long time ago.  It has enhanced my knowledge about blacks and how we all should appreciate Black History Month."
