Between Fences at Buena Vista Heritage Museum until Sept. 30

Colorado Humanities is proud to sponsor the 2010-11 Colorado tour of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street exhibition Between Fences, which began on September 4, 2010 in Canon City at the Colorado Museum of Colorado Prisons. Between Fences, which has traveled from museums in Canon City, Cortez, Meeker, Fort Morgan and Limon to the current exhibition at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum, encourages visitors to examine the significance of fences as a crucial aspect of their personal and national heritage. Fences, like barns and other structures, are tools that embody a culture and its values. By understanding both historic and contemporary fences, visitors will gain a better understanding about themselves as Americans. In addition to objects and images relating to the exhibition stories, fence materials include tools, photographs, and publications including product literature, journals, postcards, and posters.

The six Colorado museums that have hosted the exhibit since its Colorado opening in September of 2010 collaborated with community partners to develop associated programs expanding on the themes presented in Between Fences. Activities included school design and essay contests, oral history projects, film and literary discussions, guest lectures, music and artifact collection and interpretation relating to the significance of fences and boundaries in each of the host communities. Between Fences will remain on exhibit at the Buena Vista Heritage Museum until the conclusion of its Colorado tour on Sept. 30, 2011.
