SUMMARY:Chautauqua: Eleanor RooseveltHistory Live Durango
DESCRIPTION:Susan Marie Frontczak presents a living history portrayal of Eleanor Roosevelt who redefined the role of First Lady\, working tirelessly as an author\, activist and humanitarian. She became a relentless and compassionate voice for the forgotten poor\, underprivileged\, segregated and wounded.  Often working behind the scenes during FDR’s presidency\, she is now widely regarded as the most influential woman of the 20th Century.  As delegate to the United Nations she guided the development of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Behind this public life is the story of a little girl who lost both parents before the age of ten\, a debutante who felt trapped by society’s expectations\, and a young wife who raised five children before emerging into the national and world spotlight. \n  \nFrontczak has given over 800 presentations as Marie Curie\, Mary Shelley\, Irene Castle\, Clara Barton\, Erma Bombeck and Eleanor Roosevelt across 42 of the United States and nine countries abroad.  She works with both students and adults to develop their own Living History presentations and is the author of the Young Chautauqua handbooks for Colorado Humanities. \n  \n\nCo-sponsored by Colorado Humanities\, Fort Lewis College Life Long Learning Program and the Durango Arts Center.\n\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. Cash bar.\n\nSW Colorado History Month\n\n

SUMMARY:Meet Inventor Nikola TeslaHistory Live Durango
DESCRIPTION:A living history portrayal of Nikola Tesla\, a Serbian-American inventor\, was instrumental in the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system\, which prevailed over Thomas Edison’s favored DC system.  Called the “PT Barnum” of science\, he was a prescient scientist and prolific inventor\, but also a popularizer\, and a remarkably flawed human being. \n  \nNationally recognized scholar Doug Mishler has developed Chautauqua presentations for over 24 historical figures\, including Nikita Khrushchev\, Theodore Roosevelt\, P. T. Barnum\, Stonewall Jackson\, Jacques Cousteau and Pablo Picasso. SUMMARY:Durango Diaries: Historical CrimesHistory Live Durango
DESCRIPTION:From a shootout on Main Avenue to crimes from the early 1900s\, three local storytellers will share some of the most interesting tales from Durango’s past during this family-friendly installment of The Durango Herald’s storytelling series “Durango Diaries.” \n  \nStorytellers include: \n  \nJohn Peel\nJohn Peel spent three decades in journalism before leaving The Durango Herald in 2015 to start his own business creating books. For fun he mountain bikes\, plays tennis\, and hikes. He is working on a Fifth Edition of “Hiking Trails of Southwestern Colorado.” He will talk about the 1907 murder of a Secret Service agent. \n  \nRobert McDaniel\nRobert McDaniel is a fourth-generation Durango native and was the founding director of Durango’s Animas Museum. Among the museum’s many accomplishments during his tenure\, the highest honor achieved was the 2008 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. He is working on a book-length biography of Emmet Wirt\, an early 20th-century trader to the Jicarilla Apaches. He will discuss the 1922 shootout between two Durango newspaper editors. \n  \nSharon Greve\nSharon Greve graduated from the Citizen’s Police Academy in 2011\, quickly becoming a volunteer. In 2012\, she became the first Durango Police Department historian. She is the author of “Beyond the Badge\, 1881-1949\, Law and Disorder\,” a look at the early years of the Durango Police Department. She will discuss a number of interesting cases. \n  \nA donation of $5 per person will be accepted at the door.
