She felt strongly that women should be formerly educated and have rights independent of their husbands. In a time where Coverture was law\, Abigail made and kept “Money which I call mine.” An avid letter writer\, more than two thousand of her letters still exist creating an unparalleled narrative of her time.

Salone Italiano is the story of an immigrant family living in Silverton during its mining heyday at the beginning of the 20th century. DESCRIPTION:From a shootout on Main Avenue to crimes from the early 1900s\, three local storytellers will share some of the most interesting tales from Durango’s past during this family-friendly installment of The Durango Herald’s storytelling series “Durango Diaries.” \n  \nStorytellers include: \n  \nJohn Peel\nJohn Peel spent three decades in journalism before leaving The Durango Herald in 2015 to start his own business creating books. For fun he mountain bikes\, plays tennis\, and hikes. He is working on a Fifth Edition of “Hiking Trails of Southwestern Colorado.” He will talk about the 1907 murder of a Secret Service agent. \n  \nRobert McDaniel\nRobert McDaniel is a fourth-generation Durango native and was the founding director of Durango’s Animas Museum. Among the museum’s many accomplishments during his tenure\, the highest honor achieved was the 2008 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. He is working on a book-length biography of Emmet Wirt\, an early 20th-century trader to the Jicarilla Apaches. He will discuss the 1922 shootout between two Durango newspaper editors. \n  \nSharon Greve\nSharon Greve graduated from the Citizen’s Police Academy in 2011\, quickly becoming a volunteer. In 2012\, she became the first Durango Police Department historian. She is the author of “Beyond the Badge\, 1881-1949\, Law and Disorder\,” a look at the early years of the Durango Police Department. She will discuss a number of interesting cases. \n  \nA donation of $5 per person will be accepted at the door.

SUMMARY:Meet Inventor Nikola TeslaHistory Live Durango
DESCRIPTION:Serbian-American engineer/inventor Nikola Tesla is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.  He became a naturalized American citizen after immigrating in 1884\, and worked for a short time at the Edison Works in New York before striking out on his own. Tesla patented and popularized marketable items such as mechanical oscillators/generators\, electrical discharge tubes\, and early X-ray imaging. He pursued ideas for wireless lighting\, and worldwide wireless electric power distribution and was working on a wireless communication device. \nTesla was renowned for much greater showmanship than his consistent critic Thomas Edison\, however alongside his great achievements were copious amounts of humbug. Meet intriguing inventor Nikola Tesla portrayed by Chautauqua scholar Doug Mishler at one of the birthplaces of AC power! \nNationally recognized scholar Doug Mishler has developed Chautauqua presentations for over 24 historical figures\, including Nikita Khrushchev\, Theodore Roosevelt\, P. T. Barnum\, Stonewall Jackson\, Jacques Cousteau and Pablo Picasso.  He is the founder & Managing Artistic Director of Restless Artists’ Theatre\, and teaches history at the University of Nevada. \n  \nSW Colorado History Month \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Andrew Gulliford\n\nIt wasn’t only men who won the West! Across Colorado and perhaps the entire Rocky Mountains\, there was only one female jackpacker who ran a string of burros carrying food\, supplies\, and dynamite into remote high altitude mines. On her return trips she carried heavy sacks of gold and silver ore and at least once she packed out a deceased miner. Olga Little\, only 5’ 4” and a 138 lbs. earned a solid reputation as a packer in the La Plata Mountains. This is the story of her 40+ year career told from the people who knew her and from magazine and newspaper accounts. What did Olga Little do to become famous? She was a muscular\, resourceful woman who excelled in a man’s vocation.\n\nPresented by Andrew Gulliford\, professor of history and Environmental Studies at Fort Lewis College.\n\n\n\nSW Colorado History Month\n\n\n
