SUMMARY:Charles Darwin and His Revolutionary Idea – History Live! Durango
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable\nLocation: The Powerhouse Museum\nContact: Shelley Walchak\, 303.941.4012\, swalchak@gmail.com \nImagine an evening with the affable\, young Charles Darwin\, among friends\, telling amazing stories of his adventure sailing around the world on HMS Beagle. Darwin shares humorous tales of his training as a naturalist\, his insights into South American geology\, his discovery of strange creatures on the Galapagos Archipelago and most importantly\, the scientific evidence that led to his revolutionary theory. Storyteller and science teacher\, Brian “Fox” Ellis steps into Darwin’s shoes to engage the audience in a discussion of the facts so they can draw their own conclusions. \n Equal parts dramatic storytelling\, stand-up comedy and show and tell\, listeners are immersed in the intellectual world of one of history’s greatest scientific minds. He brings a wide array of fossils\, insects\, plants\, and study skins so the audience can experience the discoveries of Darwin with hands-on analysis. \nHistory Live! Chautauqua 3

SUMMARY:History Live Durango -- Erma Bombeck Chautauqua Portrayal by Susan Marie Frontczak
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Colorado Humanities and the Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable\nLocation: Powerhouse Science Center\nContact: Shelley Walchak\, swalchak@gmail.com\, 303.941.4012\, \nErma Bombeck captured with paring-knife-sharp humor the daily life of a new American phenomenon: the suburban housewife. Having figured out from her own personal experience that if you can laugh at it you can live with it\, she chronicled the housewife’s daily struggles in her column “At Wit’s End” three days a week. She eventually appeared in 900 newspapers across the country and in books such as I Lost Everything in the Post-Natal Depression and The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank. Bombeck brought to American awareness the life of women whose lives otherwise felt invisible and taken for granted. This program consists of a monologue in-character\, followed first by a Q&A with “Erma Bombeck” and then by a Q&A with the scholar/presenter.

SUMMARY:Meet Inventor Nikola TeslaHistory Live Durango
DESCRIPTION:Serbian-American engineer/inventor Nikola Tesla is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.  He became a naturalized American citizen after immigrating in 1884\, and worked for a short time at the Edison Works in New York before striking out on his own. Tesla patented and popularized marketable items such as mechanical oscillators/generators\, electrical discharge tubes\, and early X-ray imaging. He pursued ideas for wireless lighting\, and worldwide wireless electric power distribution and was working on a wireless communication device. \n  \nTesla was renowned for much greater showmanship than his consistent critic Thomas Edison\, however alongside his great achievements were copious amounts of humbug. Meet intriguing inventor Nikola Tesla portrayed by Chautauqua scholar Doug Mishler at one of the birthplaces of AC power! \n  \nNationally recognized scholar Doug Mishler has developed Chautauqua presentations for over 24 historical figures\, including Nikita Khrushchev\, Theodore Roosevelt\, P. T. Barnum\, Stonewall Jackson\, Jacques Cousteau and Pablo Picasso.  He is the founder & Managing Artistic Director of Restless Artists’ Theatre\, and teaches history at the University of Nevada.
