Colorado Encyclopedia
What
A comprehensive and interactive source of reliable information on the state of Colorado, organized around six themes–origins, diversity, community, ecology, political economy, and place. The Colorado Encyclopedia features over 700 entries, approximately 25 percent of which are available at 4th-, 8th-, and 10th-grade reading levels and include Annotated Resource Sets for educators.
Colorado Encyclopedia is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed on this site do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities and by a History Colorado State Historical Fund grant. The content and opinions contained herein do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of History Colorado.
Why
Educators at all of the state’s schools, colleges, and universities now have a vetted online resource for all things Colorado that will grow and improve over time. In addition, by accepting article contributions from the public and collaborating with local writers, museums, historical societies, libraries, and educators, the Colorado Encyclopedia allows Coloradans to tell the story of the Centennial State, instead of leaving that to Wikipedia or the random results of a Google search.
Who
The Colorado Encyclopedia [1] serves adults, K-12 students, researchers and educators, businesspeople, tourists, journalists, legislators, and anyone seeking reliable information about Colorado.
Lead partners Colorado Humanities and Colorado State University are working with History Colorado, Center of the American West, Colorado State Library, and the University Press of Colorado to produce the Encyclopedia, which relies on expert contributors and staff to produce and edit entries.
The Encyclopedia also accepts topic suggestions and articles [2] from the public. We are unable to pay public contributors at this time.
